Welcome to Old River Outfitters
If
you like small group hunting with little pressure, we have just
the place for you. Old River Outfitters is a family owned and operated
hunting provider in Southeastern Iowa, just north of the Missouri
border. We are based out of Appanoose county. This region of Iowa
is becoming well known for trophy whitetail deer and the abundance
of wild turkeys. Our home farm is 350 acres of rolling hardwood
timber, wetlands, river bottom timber, a pine grove, two ponds,
food plots, ridges and deep wooded ravines. We have hunted this
area for years and are extremely familiar with all aspects of the
farm we hunt.
All of our land
is managed for quality trophy whitetails and large flocks of turkeys.
We take pride in maintaining a quality herd of whitetails and turkeys.
To help us do this, we have food plots of high protein clover, soy
beans, turnips, winter wheat, oats, as well as a large crop of acorns
from our oak filled timber.
We offer turkey
hunting in the spring and deer hunting in the fall and winter. The
spring turkey season is gun and/or bow. It opens in April and has
four different seasons that run until the middle of May.
We offer a variety of opportunities for deer hunting. Bow hunting
opens October 1st, and there is an early muzzleloader season which
runs for nine days in October. The muzzleloader season offers a
great chance to harvest a quality early season buck with a firearm.
Bow hunting runs until the first Saturday of December, then the
shotgun season opens. It lasts for two weeks and is split into a
five day and nine day season. Bow season then opens again, as well
as a late muzzleloader season. Both of these last until January
10th. Some years, depending on the population, there is also a special
doe only season in mid January.
We are not the
biggest outfitter around, but the land we hunt is excellent for
producing trophy whitetails and turkeys and because the other landowners
in the area also practice Quality Deer Management, we have been
able to grow and maintain a quality herd of whitetail deer. Because
we do practice Quality Deer Management, we thoroughly encourage
our hunters to take a mature doe as well as a trophy buck. We feel
that maintaining the right ratio of bucks to does is as important
as anything else we do to grow trophy whitetails
