Deer Hunting
What makes Old River Outfitters different?
All of our deer hunts are bow hunting only. Iowa is one of very few states that does not have a firearm season until after Thanksgiving. This enables us to bow hunt during the entire Rut without interruption. We believe that this is one of the main reasons Iowa has such a tremendous amount of trophy bucks harvested with a bow every year. Iowa’s bow season opens October 1st and runs until the first Saturday of December. The late bow season will open in mid to late December and continue until January 10th.
Limited number of hunters each year. At Old River Outfitters you are not going to hunt pressured animals. We keep the number of hunters down, so our hunters will have a chance to hunt whitetails in their natural setting. We take a maximum of 6 hunters per year, but prefer to only host 4 per year. The 6 rule maximum is usually a group of hunters. With the small number of hunters on our property, each hunter is given a great opportunity to harvest a buck that is the “buck of a lifetime”.
Our land is managed for trophy whitetails. We take pride in the management of our property. To help us do this, we have food plots of high protein clover, soy beans, turnips, winter wheat, oats, as well as a large crop of acorns from our oak filled timber. We also provide supplemental mineral sites during the late winter through the late summer. We believe this helps the bucks get a head start going in to the growing season and allows the does to have healthier fawns. Both of these are benefits that are passed on to our hunters.
